Discipline over Motivation

Discipline over Motivation

My daughter and I are reading a book called Way of the Warrior Kid by Jocko Willink.   Kendall is loving the book, and one of the points that was just discussed was Discipline over Motivation.   The author points out that discipline if FAR superior to motivation.    Think about it, if you only worked out when you were motivated, how often would that be.   I know there are many weeks that I wouldn’t workout at all.   Discipline is needed to continue doing what is right even when you don’t want to do it.    This perspective can be taken even 1 step further.   Discipline over time leads to a habit.   Habits, as we know, are very hard to break, therefore having the discipline up front to create powerful good habits leads to amazing results over the long haul.

Discipline lead to Habit

In the chapter that we just read Jocko talks about the discipline of waking up early to accomplish something first thing in the morning.   I can attest to the power of this and how a few weeks of discipline leads to a habit.   I’ve been waking up early each morning, around 5 AM, and spending time doing something physical.   Since I spend so much time at the gym in the evenings, this early morning time is usually spent stretching and addressing the small aches and pains that have accumulated over the week.   I’ve found that over the last couple of weeks I no longer need my alarm to wake up at this time.   The discipline of suffering through this initially has lead to the habit that allows me to do it automatically.

What habits have you created that you can build on?   What habits do you hope to create with a little extra discipline?
